Skills Assessment authority for Special Education Teacher Nec is Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Applications are assessed against two criteria: Qualifications AND English Language Proficiency. The applicant must meet both requirements to obtain a positive skills assessment
  • Qualifications
    • Successful completion of a minimum of four years full time or part time equivalent higher education level of study. It can also include other qualifications
      • This must include a relevant initial teacher education qualification that is an Australian Bachelor Degree – AQF level 7 or higher
        • 1-year full time university level study of Secondary School Teacher; and
        • Completion of at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students from 13 to 18 years of age in a secondary school setting

    • Study must include one-year full time or part time equivalent of special education resulting in a qualification comparable to Australia Bachelor Degree or higher
    • If the study is the component of the initial teacher education qualification
      • The supervised teaching practice must be completed in a special education setting
  • English Language Proficiency
    • Completion of four years of study comparable to an Australian Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7) in higher education in either of the following countries:
      • Australia
      • Canada
      • Republic of Ireland
      • New Zealand
      • United Kingdom
      • United States of America
        OR
    • Completion of an English language test – IETLS
      • Score of at least 7.0 in reading and writing
      • Score of at least 8.0 in speaking and listening

  • Planning, organising and implementing special programs to provide remedial or advanced tuition
  • Administering various forms of assessment and interpreting the results
  • Teaching basic academic subjects, and practical and self-help skills to hearing and sight impaired students
  • Devising instructional materials, methods and aids to assist in training and rehabilitation
  • Advising, instructing and counselling parents and teachers on the availability and use of special techniques

Subclass 190 visa– Skilled Nominated Visa & Subclass 491 visa – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa

To apply for visa subclass 190 and visa subclass 491, you need to have a nomination from the state/territory government where you want to live and work. Each State and Territory have individual requirements that must be met in order to receive nomination. (See below)

While the 190 visa is a permanent visa, subclass 491 visa gives you right to live and work in regional Australia for 5 years with a pathway to permanent residency through the subclass 191 visa.

485 Visa – Graduate Temporary Visa (Graduate Work Stream)

The 485 visa is a work visa available to international students who have completed two years of study in Australia. It is an 18-month visa that has full work rights and full study rights. It also allows you to travel freely to and from Australia throughout the validity of the visa.

To be eligible for visa 485, you need to meet the following criteria:

Subclass 491 Family Sponsored visa – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa

This 491 Family sponsored visa requires you to have a family member who is living in regional area to sponsor you. This visa offers pathway to permanent residency through visa subclass 191.

The 407 visa a short stay visa for individuals to participate in occupational training or professional development in Australia. This visa is generally valid to stay in Australia for 2 years. Please note this visa is subject to condition 8102 which forbids work apart from the training that is specified in the visa application. You are also required to maintain health insurance whilst in Australia.

To be eligible for visa 407, you need to meet the following criteria:

Study Pathway to Special Education Teacher

Special education teachers teach children of primary through to secondary school age to develop social, physical, emotional and intellectual skills. They work with individual students and groups. To become a Special Education Teacher, a Bachelor of Education with a major in Special Education is required. If you have previous qualifications in Education, you can specialise in this field by completing postgraduate qualifications. You may also need:
